Familyman

What Gal have you got ?

If its the 1.9TDi then the belts are very simple to change.

Drop the engine tray and slacken the pivot bolts on the outer "Vee Belt".

Slacken and rotate the capston type tensioning bolt on the steering pump.

Remove "Vee Belt".

Using a ring spanner relieve tension on inner "Multi Vee" belt by lifting tensioner away from belt then lift belt off top driven pulley.

Remove "Multi Vee" belt.

Refitting is simply the reverse order.

Good luck

Sorry cant help on the petrol engine derivatives.

And I would advise not to just tighten an old belt to stop the squealing.

As the belt gets older it goes harder and that causes the slipping. If you simply tighten the old belt you will stress the bearings on the pump etc, and that will cause premature failure. And that will cost you much much more to fix than the price of a new Vee belt.

this could be the starter motor making the noise.

does it happen every time, and how long does it last?

screeching noise usually on first start of day, then after that seems o.k. or if steering is at full lock i.e parking and even then not every time .Drive belt has 6K on it since renewal

Gal is 96 t.d.i. 109k, belt renewed 6k ago. I don't know if this makes any difference but Gal does not do many miles ,maybe used once a week.Would more regular use make a difference?. Total mileage by me is 7k in two years!

Could also be the starter motor not retracting quick enough. Do a search on this board, there have been other threads on this subject.

Thinks on 96 model Tdi the aux belt is manually tensioned. Check.

Yep, I think it is a normal belt and it is tensioned by sliding the PAS pump.
